Learning Opportunity | Peer Exchange Visit

Global Giving UK and Big Lottery Fund in co-ordination with ECCA organized Peer Exchange Visit with other partner organizations of Nepal. The program was hosted by ECCA on 27th April, 2017, Thursday at organization premises. Altogether 11 participants from organizations including ECCA participated in the program.

Regarding the program, Tara Prasad Adhikari, Program Director of Volunteers Community Nepal said, “This peer learning exchange visit has played an effective role in supporting, developing and empowering each other organization to do the programs in a new way.”

In addition, participants also visited Pushpanjali Secondary School, one of ECCA’s project schools of Lalitpur.

“I am very impressed to see the students of Pushpanjali Secondary School working together in nature club and organizing different activities. They are also involved in safe water programs and community involvement programs which have helped to see the impact”, shared Dil Maya Lama, Project Implementation Manager of Global Action Nepal

“This has helped moreover in future improvement and implementation of programs in our organization”, said Keshav Raj Paudyal, Community Frontline Associate of Accountability Lab.

Breaking the Taboo of Menstruation

In Nepal, menstrual hygiene education can play a life-changing role. It is a prioritized subject in every WASH oriented programs of ECCA and this year’s World Menstrual Hygiene Day proved to be extra special.

Here’s how one of our ECCA counselors Yaji Sharma shares her account of Menstrual Hygiene Day celebration-

On early morning, our team of ECCA moved to Udaya Kharka Higher Secondary School located at Chapagaun around 22 km north from Bajra Barahi Mandir. Our main purpose was to access menstrual hygiene knowledge, attitudes and practices of school girls and to prompt healthy atmosphere in the school. As we started documentary show followed by discussion program among 55 students and additional teachers, we found that the students lacked sufficient knowledge and behavioral practice on menstrual hygiene. There was equal hesitation to interact freely about menstruation.

But few stood out. Sadiksha Chaudhary, another ECCA counselor writes about her discovery of 15 years old Sabina-

New lease on Life

“Yes, Menstrual Hygiene Awareness is something that has given me a new lease on life. I was totally anonymous about health risk of poor menstrual hygiene management but now, I can break my silence and build awareness among others.” Sabina, a grade nine student of Kittine Higher Secondary School and president of school’s Nature Club shared in an excited voice.

Sabina’s curiosity towards MHM had attracted everyone in awareness session. She seemed to be more active than other students. and frequently requested everyone to listen attentively. She says she used to use sanitary pads for more than 6 hours, sometimes, a whole day. She used to hide her sanitary clothes so that no one could see it. Sometimes, she even used to leave school. She also says now she is aware about infections that might occur to due to poor menstrual hygiene management.

“I am now more attentive towards MHM and also looking forward to inform my family, friends and relatives about it”, said Ms. Shrestha. “Thank you ECCA and ECCA counselors for all the help”, she added.

Infact, ECCA will continue to help schools understand and make requisite arrangements so that girls need not skip school due to menstruation or drop out completely. (A research grant has been announced on the topic “WASH and Girl Friendly Toilet: Social and Technical aspects in the context of Nepal” targeting young and enthusiastic researchers) Besides this, schools can play a very important role by providing exclusive focus on menstrual hygiene while developing school’s health education curriculum. Improving toilet and water facilities is an obvious solution but teachers and parents also carry a responsibility to guide girls correctly on safe menstrual practice.

 

 

 

 

Uplifting Nature Clubs through Management Trainings

Southern Lalitpur is one of the core regions where ECCA Nepal has been working for past 2 decades to enhance quality education and school environment. The program comprises of involving students that make them participate and motivate into activities where the students can learn as well as contribute towards improvement of school. Various software program, nature club establishments and trainings, and other support are the activities of ECCA to promote students in quality education and behavioral change.

As such of a regular program, a two days training program was organized for nature club members from Feb 1- Feb 13, 2016. The program, which was supported by Wilkins Memorial Trust, welcomed 25 participants from each nature clubs of 9 different schools. The prime objective of this program was to develop different life skills and responsibility handling skills  among nature club members for conducting effective and sustainable programs. Participants were from:

  1. Shree Bag Bhairab Higher Secondary School -Kaleshwor
  2. Shree Magar Gaun Higher Secondary School -Sankhu
  3. Shree Goth Bhanjyang H.S.S-Dalchoki
  4. Shree Bag Bhairab Secondary School-Chaughare
  5. Shree Gyanodaya L.S.S-Chaughare
  6. Shree Kalidevi H.S.S-Malta
  7. Shree Bhidyadeshori H.S.S-Asrang
  8. Shree Janajagriti H.S.S- Ikudol
  9. Shree Mahakalidevi H.S.S-Bhattedanda

To conduct the two days training camp in each school, the group was divided into two teams who mobilized around the targeted schools. The training camp content comprised of strengthening of nature club, promotion of nature club activities, importance of greenery management and herbal garden, life skill activities, WASH session and activities, GLOBE activities (atmosphere observation and data collection) and alternative energy usage sessions like IAS (Improved Animal Shed), ICS (Improved Cooking Stove).

“The training helped to erase our confusions regarding club management and organizing effective and needed programs. I am now more capable of handling my responsibility as the secretary of my club”, said one of the participants.

During the training, students were able to make their annual plan for nature club and also get ideas for selecting types of programs. This will now help them to enhance their club activities and promote their role in well managed and sustainable school improvement. Students were especially interested in knowing more activities involving GLOBE protocol

ECCA can conduct further more programs with specialization on hygiene and green environment, as there are still not enough sanitary facilities and green environment on school.

All for a better Education; Educational Support by ECCA for 47 schools

On January 24, 2016 ECCA (Environmental Camps for Conservation Awareness) with Global Giving‘s support provided white boards, markers, magnetic dusters and inks as educational support to 47 schools of 9 Village Development Committees (Dalchoki, Ikudol, Asrang, Bhattedada, Malta, Chaughare, Kaleshwor, Sankhu and Gimde) of southern Lalitpur. The materials were handed over to representatives of each school by Senior Social Mobilization Officer of Lalitpur District Mr. Bisweswor Koirala and ECCA program officer Mr. Rabindra Khatri.

 The educational support is expected to provide more efficient and easy learning for more than 2400 students of these schools which are currently in their phase of reestablishing the school environment after being affected by the earthquake.

“We use blackboards for teaching and the chalk dust affects health of us teachers to a great extent. Now we won’t have to worry much”, said Bal Bahadur Lama principal of Kalidevi Primary School, Sankhu

Help and A Little Love this Winter

Chaughare is one of the coldest places of southern Lalitpur district in Nepal. With the arrival of winter season, the temperature goes down at ultimate level often creating serious problems for regular conduction of schools. This year the problem is even worse. The earthquake of April made many students homeless leaving them to struggle for fulfillment of the most basic requirements of life: food and clothes. Attending schools is an equal challenge. There is little solace for those who can afford some clothing(which is a rare case) but for the rest, the struggle is beyond imagination.

To solve this problem, ECCA (Environmental Camps for Conservation Awareness) in co-ordination with District Education Office and with Global Giving‘s support organized ‘Winterization Support program‘ for the students of Shree Bagh Bhairab Secondary School of Lalitpur, Chaughare on January 13, 2016. Ms. Lorina Sthapit also contributed to the program. With Assistant District Education Officer of Lalitpur Mr. Khem Adhikari as the chief guest along with program officer and representative from ECCA Mr.Rabindra Khatri, all 214 students of the school were provided with woolen jackets and caps.

“After the earthquake, coming to school and staying in class during the shivering cold is hard. But… today is a different day. We hope every suffering child receives supports like we have. Thank you for caring”, said Pema Lama, vice president of school’s nature club with a smile. Along with him, all the students shared their happiness in similar way at the end of the day.

Earthquake Disaster Relief Response – Providing Water Treatment Option

Following the devastating earthquake, we feared the big issue on widespread of epidemics arises almost instantly. Over 8 million people have been directly affected by the earthquake that took place on April 25, 2015 in Nepal. The rapid development of the cities around the country has left the citizens with very few options for open areas. Resulting, people to be forced reside in tents and camps in am open spaces scattered around the affected areas. And all these areas are heavily congested.

Water, food and electricity are in short supply. With the rapid decline in the living conditions, there are no proper sanitation facilities in the affected areas. There is a high probability of using contaminated water which increases health and hygiene issues. The lack of proper health facilities and medicines further stress upon the need to prevent epidemics in the affected areas.

In the aftermath of an earthquake, water borne diseases are one of the most easily transmitted ones. Keeping this in mind, ECCA has started production of chlorine solution at its Head Office in Jwagol. The active volunteers along with members of Rotaract Club of Himalay Patan (RCHP) supported on bottling the chlorine solution along with its distribution across the affected areas since the early morning of April 28. Without fearing the downpour of water in day time, the energetic youth volunteers of ECCA and RCHP members, actively supplied WATASOL (chlorine solution) in communal shelters and camps located at various locations of Kathmandu valley. Few volunteers actively participated in distributing WATASOL around Tudhikel cleanup campaign, where as members of RCHP rushed towards various locations of Lubhu, Thaiba, Harrishiddhi and Badegaun to distribute WATASOL.

In coordination with the volunteers and relief team of Teach For Nepal (TFN), we have already supplied WATASOL to the affected communities in Sindhupalchowk.
