27th July 2015, was a clear and sunny day when our team left ECCA-office for an approx two-hours-ride to a small village located in Chaughare VDC, Lalitpur. In the fond of our car, there were Solar Lighting Systems to be distributed to EQ affected families in need. Additionally, we carried various piles of note books for the students in severely damaged school in the same area. I feel it was a short trip, but the activities with a long-term impact.

Some families were already waiting for us when we arrive at the partly destroyed school yard (Shree Gyanodaya Lower Secondary School, Chaughare) to distribute the Solar Lighting System. The system distributed consisted of 2 bright bulbs along with the mobile charging facility and radio inbuild in the system. This reliable and environmentally friendly source of electricity for their homes. will keep the family members safe during the dark hours of night time and support the family members connected with communications and information.

As we had limited system to support the community members, Mr. Tej Lama (Chairman of School Management Committee) supported us through identifying the highly needy family members in the community. Families with old aged members, disabled members, nursing mothers, and school going children were highly prioritized in the distribution.

Amongst them, there’s a 99-year-old lady with her great-granddaughter. She still remembers her earthquake experience of 1933 and shared about her experience during that time. The great-granddaughter also shares her joy with other children and gathers together with her friends who all love dancing.

In the scenery of the partly destroyed school yard, the Solar systems stand like a symbol of hope and shows that earthquake recovery and ecology can go together hand in hand. And apart from providing electricity for the basic needs of families, there will be still enough solar power for playing music – so the girls can go on dancing!

Tents’ as a Temporary Shelter

“Home is where you feel the safety and having a roof above your head is the key to creating a beautiful family.” What if you worked hard all your life for it and then everything gets buried in a blink of an eye?

While the earthquake of 25th April, 2015 took lives of thousands, it has left another millions homeless. They nomore have a safe place to call their home. All the earnings of their life that they chose to spend on building a house of their own now lie just as painful reminiscences of the disaster. Many held onto their houses as  a source of economy and there’s no saying on how hard the quake hit livelihood of countless Nepalese people.

One of such victims is Mr. Kaji Ram Maharjan, a resident of Debdhunga, Kirtipur. Though he didn’t witness any loss of lives in his family, his house was severely damaged during the earthquake. “According to structural experts inspection, it’s unfit to live in. Now that means there’s no significance in having a house. Perhaps the only solution is to demolish it”, said Maharjan with a sad voice. With seven family members to look after including his old parents and his children, he was deeply worried about building a shelter until ECCA (Environment Camps for Conservation Awareness) came forward to help him and other families of Kirtipur who held similar stories of grief.

Many families were relieved as ECCA provided them with tents as temporary shelters. One could see their faces lit up as they set up the tents in unison. ECCA distributed sixteen tents to different victimized families of Kirtipur on June 14, June 28 and June 30.

According to Maharjan, the tents have proved to be a huge relief for all the families. “We’re now living in the tent except during heavy rains. But we do feel more secure than before and we thank ECCA for its generous contribution”, said he. “It will take a great deal of time to rebuild our houses. Till then we will have to rely on these tents and call it home.”, he added with a smile.

During the assessment and distribution of relief materials in Dolakha (in May 2015), the ECCA team found heavy damages to school buildings, WASH infrastructure and health threat among children and even among adult and elderly people. Most of school students’ education materials were buried under the debris, due to which they were anxious on how to restart their school life. Therefore, there was an urgent need of recovery and rehabilitation program for the school students.

At first, ECCA conducted a three days TOT training program for the youth volunteers on 17th-19th June 2015 at ECCA premises Kathmandu. The youths were trained on WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene), Life Skills along with psychological activities specially designed for the current situation so as to help the students recover from the traumatized situation and continue their studies at school.

Immediately after the training, 20 youth volunteers (divided into 4 groups) were mobilized at 4 project schools of Mirge, Dolakha (Majh Gaun Lower Secondary School, Mirge 1; Kali Dhunga Higher Secondary School, Mirge 7; Kali Devi Secondary School, Payele; and Lali Gurash Bright Future English School, Laligurash Danda). They stayed there for 5 days (22nd -26th June, 2015) and facilitated different fun, skillful, engaging and relieving activities for all the 664 students of the four schools to support them to get back to their normal school lives again. To conduct the WASH and Life Skill Camp in harmony and to gain the maximum benefit from the camp program, class wise division was done into 4 categories- Class 1-3, 4-5, 6-8 and 9-10.

Shyam Lama, member of ‘Majh Gaun Nature Club’ expressed “It was ECCA counselors who first taught us how to make chlorine solution (WATASOL). They provided us with all the required materials and gave us enough training. Now we can prepare WATASOL on our own and protect ourselves from water borne diseases.” Likewise, mother of Bilash Paudel of class 3 from Shree Kali Dhunga Higher Secondary School expressed that she was very happy to see positive impacts on her son. He shared his learning and taught the hand washing method to his family members.

As the devastating earthquake has destroyed the water sources, the chances of contracting water borne diseases have increased. To prevent an outbreak, the students were taught hand washing activity and the production and use of WATASOL for water purification.

“I have seen progressive change in the behavior and regular attendance of the students due to the camp activities. Now, the students are more active, energetic and lively in the schools. The technique is very effective as they are learning through fun and interactive activities. Again, I am very grateful to ECCA team and the volunteers for all the support and the help.”- Words shared by Puskar Dahal, Teacher of Kali Dhunga Higher Secondary School, Mirge 7.

Psychological activities were also included in the camp sessions to help the students recover from the trauma they were facing due to the earthquake. Many students were mentally disturbed and not in a state to attend schools continuously. So as to help the students, different activities like- Sharing experience, Dominant and non dominant hand exercise, yesterday today tomorrow, Anger Management, Draw your safe space, Balloon blast and coping skill via ball games were performed. These activities helped the students to minimize their distress.

ECCA supported a day meal in all the project schools for the students and the staff members during the training period. Due to shortage of food materials, students were not attending the schools earlier. Day meal helped the students to come to the school continuously.

Ramji Ghimire, Kali Devi Lower Secondary School shared “I express my gratitude to ECCA for supporting stationery materials (copy, dot pens, pencils, erasers and sharpeners) for all the students and game materials (carom board, chess board, ludo, skipping, football, volleyball and flying disk), first aid kit, jerry cans, white boards and markers for school. ECCA also supported the construction of water tank in the school as devastating earthquake of 12th May, 2015 severely damaged water tanks of our school.”

“Namaste miss. Namaste sir. Welcome to our school.” When there are blissful tiny voices greeting you along with their tiny hands heavy with garlands that clearly define affection, plus those warm smiles loaded with innocence, you’re bound to forget all your fatigue and consider yourself blessed to be among those people with big hearts. Likewise, the moment we got an affectionate welcome at Kalidevi Lower secondary School of Mirge, Dolakha on June we felt that the challenges we faced on our way, which included of a massive rainfall plus a life-threatening landslide were all worth it.

But the next moment when we let our eyes wander, we saw true horrors of earthquake. The earthquake had left them nothing but a tiny building. All other school infrastructures were in rubbles. Although some temporary structures had been set up for running the classes, most of the students had no materials for study. Many students had their uniform and books buried during the earthquake. Desks and benches were made locally yet they were still not enough for students. We further discovered that the health status of all the children was in a risky situation. All the students and even teachers used tap water from the toilet directly for drinking. Moreover, the nature club of the school was already functionless long ago so there was no chlorine production and no use of chlorine as well. Hence, our foremost objective lied in reactivating the nature club and making all students informative regarding sanitation and healthy habits besides making efforts to take them out of the earthquake trauma.

We thus started our sessions as scheduled, with numerous games and activities. The children were surprisingly shy and there were few who volunteered for anything we asked. As we started our drawing and coloring sessions in pre-primary classrooms, they were happy beyond anything. Even the teachers told us that they themselves rarely taught children that way. On the other hand, older students seemed fascinated by things that could be learned through art and games.

On our second morning, we witnessed yet another suffering of the school. Previous night’s rainfall had pooled the school ground and half of the temporary classrooms were flooded with water. Students were busy ploughing around the ground for a water outlet and we got worried about our sessions. Despite everything, we were determined to place the students at ease and try sharing our earthquake experiences together so that they could free themselves from the subconscious trauma.

“During the earthquake of April 25, 2015 I was in maize field working with my mom. When the quake hit us, my mom started screaming and all houses around us started collapsing. That night all of us villagers slept in the maize field of our neighbors and ate whatever we had. Our home got destroyed and we’re now living in temporary shelter. I don’t think it’s ever going to be same again…” As Pabitra spoke these words, the whole class was silent. One by one, every student began to speak up and involuntarily there established a bond among us that reminded us of our common misery and then the strength that we could find among ourselves to overcome it.

On our third and last day, we reformed a nature club in the school. After teaching and demonstrating them things about WATASOL, its method of production and usage, they grew confident about producing and distributing it in the village for safe drinking water.

Meanwhile students from lower section enjoyed learning proper hand washing techniques and other creative activities.

On the second half of the day, the school held a short farewell programme during which we distributed copies and other stationery materials to the students and eventually handed over whiteboards, markers, game materials and a first-aid kit to the school. An exhibition was held at the same time which exhibited our students’ works. Parents observed and thanked us for helping their children. And when the teachers enthusiastically said that they were motivated by our work, we couldn’t help smiling. We were humbled moreby warm farewell given by the children. The moment was indeed very overwhelming because when those blissful tiny voices bade us farewell along with their tiny hands and hugs that clearly defined affection,we forgot the world for a moment and considered ourselves blessed to be among all those people with big hearts.

5 teams began their journey to the rural areas of Lalitpur on June 6, 2015. The teams had prepared their session plans and the required materials as per the trainings they had received few days ago.

As we made our way towards the rural area, we were reminded of the devastation caused by the earthquake of April 25, 2015. The road was covered with dust from the debris of the collapsed houses. Some houses were being demolished at several places while many had temporary supports to prevent them from collapsing.

My team was assigned to Dalchoki, Lalitpur. The massive contrast of the standard of living between the city and the villages of the same district was unexpected. In just an hour ride, we reached a village so rural and under developed, it was hardly believable that it was only about 30 km away from the capital.

We unloaded all our supplies on the top of the hill and began our descend to the school located below. The steep slope of the road made it increasingly difficult (and tiring) to make several trips. With the help from the villagers, we were able to take all our supplies to the school in two trips.

We began exploring the school premises for a place to pitch our tent and to assemble our supplies. The school had generously arranged utensils and a gas stove for our use. We decided to pitch our tents inside the Temporary Learning Centers as there were no other open spaces and fierce winds usually dominated the night air. We decided a session plan, divided our responsibilities before dinner and called it a day.

Early the next day, we disassembled our tents and began preparing the materials needed for the sessions. After a quick breakfast, we headed for a short meeting with the teachers and staffs of the school to introduce ourselves as well as discuss about our session plans.

Together with Yangji Sherpa, my first session started off at 11am with the students from Grade 1-3. With their classrooms destroyed by the earthquake, they were assembled under a temporary shelter outside. We began our session with a short ball game but the small children were hesitant to play with us. Next we played ‘Balloon Blast’. This game requires students to burst each others’ balloons tied to their legs while saving their own. This game was an instant success and the children enjoyed it immensely. The teachers also participated in the games, which encouraged the students to approach us. The prospective of bursting balloons excited not only the small children but the higher class students as well. A small group of students from other classes gathered to watch the little kids play.

My next session was with the students from Grade 6. After waiting eagerly for their turn, they hurriedly entered the class when I approached them. With almost 50 students, the task was a little exhausting but the students were very cooperative and eager to learn and play games. This greatly reduced the difficulties arising due to large number of students.

We provided biscuits and juice to all the students as well as the staffs during the lunch break.  My second session with the students from Grade 1-3 started off with fresh enthusiasm from the students. They were more lively and active while coloring and tracing. They began calling us “Miss”. Being called upon when they had doubts and difficulties was a proud moment for me. Getting accepted as their teacher and guiding them as they colored was a joyous moment.

My last session for the day was with the 6th graders again. Yangji accompanied me as the number of students was large. We taught them Future Ladder, an activity where the students establish their goals and learn the steps they have to climb to reach their ambition.

The day ended with loud farewells and promises to play a lot more the next day. With a little rest, we decided to explore the surrounding areas. The cool wind blowing through was refreshing against Kathmandu’s dusty and warm winds.

After a group discussion on the day’s sessions and some planning for the next day, we cooked our dinner, pitched our tents and slept soundly.

The next two days were filled with more interesting games and activities like puppet making, wall magazines, science show and wall comics for students from Grade 6-8 and mask making, clay work and rhymes for students from Grade 1-5. The number of students attending the classes started increasing as the days passed by. We organized an exhibition on the last day where they displayed all their activities done in the camp. Students from Grade 4-5 eagerly presented the new rhymes that they had learned in the sessions. We handed over game materials to the school as well.

The students showed more enthusiasm as the day went by. Some of them arrived almost an hour early and stayed back after the school and insisted on playing with us. Some of the students gave us fruits and potatoes grown locally as gifts. A few even came to see us off. Such positive responses from students made our exhaustion worthwhile.

“My daughter who normally does not like to go to school has been very eager to leave for school in the mornings. She is always asking me for the time”, a mother said to us. The teachers and parents gave us positive feedbacks as well.

We were constantly supported by the school’s principal, Mr. Laxmi Timalsina and the staffs.

The program ended with a bittersweet feeling of completing it successfully but leaving warm smiles and laughter behind. Going to remote areas and sharing our knowledge to uplift the spirits of bright young students was truly a refreshing and satisfying experience.

I would like to thank ECCA for giving us this opportunity to go and conduct camps in rural areas. It was truly a momentous  and memorable experience.

Immediately after the earthquake of April 25, ECCA mobilized its resources, linkages, staffs, counsellors and volunteers in the relief works by targeting various earthquake affected areas. ECCA responded in its own project areas as well as partnered with many other like minded organizations and individuals, in providing the relief materials in many localities. The contributions received (financial as well as material) from international well wishers were overwhelming. The volunteering done by many of the past and present ECCA counsellors, volunteers and well wishers were noteworthy. It is very much appreciated that all made contributions in their own ways. In the process, the network of ECCA has enlarged and has become stronger. Everybody feels proud to be part of ECCA. Many thanks to all.

ECCA continues to move ahead with the recovery and rehabilitation works.

A Month Into Relief & Recovery

Still after a month passed since the major earthquake struck Nepal on 25th April 2015, the devastation caused by the earthquake continues to hamper the lives of almost 8 million people in Nepal who were affected.

Fearing the outbreak of water-borne diseases, ECCA initiated to production of WATASOL (Chlorine Solution) from the 2nd day of EQ as an immediate response to tackle the possible problem of safe drinking water and sanitation issues in the communal shelters where people are forced to live their lifes. The WATASOL produced were immediately distributed for free to the affected families through mobilizing ECCA Volunteers and other organizations who were directly involved with the relief activities. More than 50 active volunteers worked tirelessly in bottling and packaging the chlorine solution along with its distribution in various locations and communal shelters. As of 28th May, ECCA has distributed over 27,000 bottles of 60ml (one to be used in each household) and over 800 bottles of 1 liter (for community water distribution system) chlorine solution amounting to a total of over 2,400 liters of chlorine that can purify 9,212,240 liters of water. Considering national average household size of 5 person, around 200,000 people have benefitted for a month.

Nepal being a developing country consists of many rural areas with mud houses. Almost all of such houses have collapsed due to the earthquake, turning entire villages into rubble. The nearing of the monsoon season and frequent landslides has piled up the long list of difficulties faced by the victims. The weather itself has been relentless with harsh winds and thunderous rains.

Hence, keeping the need of shelter in mind, ECCA distributed over 1300 units of tents & tarpaulin to families in rural areas in Dolakha, Lalitpur, Sindhupalchowk and Kavre Districts. More than 6500 people have benefited from the tents distributed.

ECCA also distributed over 850 Food Packages to people in the devastated areas of the above mentioned districts from which over 4,500 people have benefited. The distribution of food supplies were only possible through the support of various organizations like NDRA Dallas, HANDS Pakistan, Globalgiving foundations (US & UK), NAO and other individual supporters.

Over 100 sets of water filters were distributed in various locations of Lalitpur, Kavre, Bhaktapur, Sindhupalchok & Nuwakot which had over 500 beneficiaries.

Distribution of CGI sheets and Self Help kits through the support of SHA made the life of rural people easier in this time of disaster where people were looking for temporary shelter for their families.

Immediately after the earthquake, ECCA focused its resources in relief works. Now, ECCA is focusing on recovery works in the schools and the adjourning communities.

We would like to thank all our supporters and donors for helping us in our initiation of relief and recovery activities after EQ. EQ Relief: Filter Distribution

There is no disagreement that Water could be a simplest and easiest medium to get infected or transmission of various viral diseases in the current situation of natural disaster. Hence, use of safe water for various purposes in our day to day life needs to be carefully monitored and precautions need to be taken. Scarcity of water at various locations is seen due to disturbance in water distribution system. Hence, distribution of water various POU Water treatment option like water filter and WATASOL (chlorine solution) has been intensified from ECCA.

Till today, in coordination and financial support from various organizations like Nepalese Disaster Relief Association (NDRA) Dallas, Himalayan Crossroads, Nepal Child Club Network and local youth groups, 100 sets of water filters were distributed in various locations of Lalitpur, Kavre, Bhaktapur, Sindhupalchok & Nuwakot.

An orphanage located in Jharuwarashi, Lalitpur, sheltering 62 children were provided 10 sets of filter along with 10 pc of water jar for storing and carrying water. Due to the earthquake, the water storage tank got tampered and water well dried, threatening continuous supply of water of the daily use of children. Through the use of filtered water for drinking purpose, the children are now ensured to have safe water as well as far reach of water borne diseases.

Similarly, 10 sets of filter were distributed to the residents of Nuwakot where families were forced to live in communal shelters due to damage in their houses. In coordination with NCCN, 3 filters were distributed in Madhyapur Thimi, Bhaktapur, where 65 people were sheltered in tent. “The health condition of people in the tents were not good and they have no access to safe drinking water and proper sanitation. Most of the children started to with getting illness day by day”, Ms. Roni Shakya, one of the volunteers of ECCA and member of NCCN briefed the condition of communal shelter in Bhaktapur. “Distribution of these filters have ensured the availability of safe drinking water to the families living outside in tents”, she further added as she took incharge for the distribution of filter in Bhaktapur. Safe water for drinking purpose in these communal areas became a big challenge which was tackled through installing the filter in the community.

In coordination with Himalayan Crossroads, 30 sets of filters were distributed for the EQ affected families in Chokati village of Sindhupalchok District and 40 sets of filters were installed in the community shelter at Kathmandu, where families displaced from Sindhupalchok were rehabilitated.

The water filter that ECCA has been assembling are prepared through using treatment of silver colloidal solution which ensures the purity of water upto 99.99%.

When distributing Relief in Dolkha

As per the plan to distribute relief materials to the people of Mirge VDC of Dolkha District (one of the badly affected area), a team of 4 ECCA staffs and volunteers (Bipin Shrestha, Sambhu Maharjan, Bipin Dahal and Ashish Maharjan) headed to Dolkha early morning on 12th May 2015. On their way to Mirge, at 12:50 pm, another big earthquake of 7.3 magnitude striked (making Dolkha as the epicenter …. the same area where they were headed to).

The road cracked at many places, and landslides occurred at many locations along the highway. All the local markets along the highway were destroyed. Worried about their safety, the team was immediately informed to return to Kathmandu (they had travelled half the way). However, as they were determined to distribute the relief materials, they proceeded ahead, removing the boulders on the road (which had fallen from the hill slopes) and pushing their loaded vehicle where required. Due to the harsh condition, they could not reach the destination that day and had to spend the night by the side of the road (some slept inside a tent and some slept inside the vehicle they were travelling in). Rising early the next day (at 5am), they continued their trip and reached Mirge around 11am. After distributing the relief materials (tarpaulin for shelter and shovel, spade, saw, helmet, hammer to remove debris & salvage belongings from inside the damaged house), they returned back on 13th May to reach ECCA Office at 10pm.

Bipin Shrestha, Team Leader and ECCA Program Officer writes in his facebook page “After the quake, everybody called and told to return. But, the worry of 710 families for whom I and my friends are taking the relief materials pulled me”. He further adds “Upon distributing the relief material, one aged women blessed me by placing her palm on my head. It helped me to forget all my hardships and blissful tears came to my eyes.”

Badalgaun, Kavre, another project site of ECCA received relief materials on May 9th in the form of tools for the construction of shelter. The relief materials consisted of a bundle of corrugated GI sheets (6 sheets in one bundle), hammer, saw, wire and nails for each family. The relief materials were distributed to a total of 250 households in cooperation with Swiss Humanitarian Agency (SHA).

On May 7, ECCA supported shelter – CGI Sheets for 300 households of ward 3 in Gairibisauni, Kavrepalanchwok.

“We are very thankful for receiving all these tools. These tools have helped us in the reconstruction of our houses in the long run. With these, we feel that we are already one step closer in building our new houses”, a villager said with a small smile.

With 90% of the village damaged by the earthquake, people in earthquake affected rural areas have been traumatized. Many villagers haven’t even begun to think beyond their current predicament. ECCA hopes that with these tools, the villagers will be enabled to start the construction of proper shelter before the start of rainy season.
