A team of ECCA volunteers in coordination with a local from Dhohini, Nuwakot District made their way to the rural village with relief materials in the early morning of May 9th, 2015. The food ration consisting of a sack of rice, salt, lentils, oil and sugar along with tarpaulins for temporary shelter were delivered to the village where almost all the old houses have collapsed due to the earthquake.
“People are living in cowsheds & open areas with very harsh life condition”, Ashish Maharjan, a volunteer who made the trip reported. “They cannot enter their houses and it’s the same in all neighboring villages.” People are drinking water directly from the source and were unaware of the health hazards that it might create in their health. He suggested filtering the murky water with a muslin cloth which the villagers promised to oblige.
The villagers were very happy to receive the relief materials . Moreover, the villagers from the neighboring village also gathered, hoping to get some share of the materials. Some materials were distributed to the villagers from the neighboring village as well.
Ashish voiced his happiness and satisfaction over being able to help the victims but seemed to be bothered by the fact that not all the villagers were able to get their satisfied share while some received surplus.
This trip to a village in Trisuli, Nuwakot was initiated as per the request of the local villagers there. Many more programs are being conducted based on the request of the local villagers. This ensures that the relief materials reach the villages.
To increase support for our initiation and intensify the relief activities, we have also initiated a project in the website of Global Giving, an online fundraising platform. People all over the world with internet access can visit the project page Support Nepal Earthquake Relief and donate.
